Quakes bring back terror of 2004
across the ocean

Wednesday's massive Indian Ocean earthquake has left a trail of destruction in the nearest Indonesian coastal provinces of Bengkulu and West Sumatra.
The quake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and triggered
tsunami warnings as far away as India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where people living in coastal areas were asked to move to higher ground.
The natural disaster brought back bitter memories of the Dec. 26, 2004, quake that hit countries around the Indian Ocean, killing about 200,000 people.
Although Wednesday's quake was huge, the scale of destruction is moderate as it did not trigger a tsunami. As of last night, the authorities put the number of dead at nine.
The following are scenes of the quake's aftermath in Indonesia and neighboring countries.
