‘The spice of life is a loving heart’

Sarah Sechan

Sarah Sechan first came to public attention as a pretty, world-weary beyond her years MTV VJ in the late 1990s. While other VJs enjoy their moment in the spotlight before fading fast, the 33-year-old has continued on as a TV presenter, deputy chief editor of CosmoGirl Indonesia and MC. Getting married and having a son, Rajata, also has changed her life; she sparkles when she speaks about her 3-year-old bundle of joy. Apart from her son and husband, Sarah’s great loves are traveling, relaxing with a cup of coffee in the great outdoors and the following:

LOCKETS
I love memories and I love photos, so I go crazy for lockets. Whenever I see good lockets I buy them. Some of them are gifts from my husband and one from my mother that she had since she was young. They are not expensive at all, I love it that I can have them with me. I love jewelry but it has to remind me of something.

RING
The only time my husband Emir gave me jewelry was when he asked me to marry him. But then he did also give me a ring for my birthday.

iPod
My husband always gives me stuff that I need but that I wouldn’t buy myself. I’m a technophobe but at the end of the day we all need technology. He gave me an iPod and I have had it for two years. But I never learned how to put in new songs, so every time my friends went in my car they heard the same old songs. But about a year ago I finally added some new ones.

Mixer
I told Emir before my birthday last year, “I want to learn how to bake for Raja.” So he bought me a mixer. But all I have learned to make are chocolate chip cookies; the rest of the stuff from the recipe book didn’t come out very well.

Laptop
I got this for my birthday this year. Actually I just learned the other day that I could use it at Starbucks. I finally found out that if you have a hotspot, it’s that simple! He gave me this because we were fighting over using the computer as he works from home as a designer. I bring it with me except when I have Raja with me, when I have to focus on him.

Travel
I haven’t been traveling all my life – I’m very young! But I’ve always loved traveling because it feels like a vacation. Even when I was traveling for MTV it wasn’t like work because we always went to fun places. I want my son to be well traveled. I love all the places I’ve been to, but especially Vietnam; the food and the people are great and it has a good energy.

Emir’s pasta
I love a lot of things, including the dessert here at Dapur, es lembut, which is avocado juice and ice cream, you can’t get it anywhere else because they created it. But the thing I really love is my husband’s penne paste, with tomato sauce and chorizo. He would cook it for me before we married; it’s really yummy.

Hotel beds
There is nothing like a hotel bed. I’ve tried to recreate the same feeling with sheets and everything, but it’s not the same. When I’m going out of town, I have to find out where I’m staying; I get so excited.
