Single White Male

White is the big hit this year for men. It’s a color that almost universally symbolizes purity, but wearing it is no given that you will be able to assume that mantle (and what or who is truly pure and simple in this troubled little society of ours?).

A classic whose presence faded from the catwalk recently, white is now dominating the collections of several designers. From trousers and trench coats from Hermes, Bottega Venetta shoes, supertight Gucci pants to Hugo Boss suits, white is everywhere.

White is bound to attract attention, not all of it flattering. For some, who dismiss it as the uniform of hospital staff, it is too plain a hue. To avoid blending in with the background, the standard advice is to pair white garments with color (when matched with red it may put you in a patriotic mood, although it might be better suited for the flagpole).

But this time I want you to be brave enough to wear it all by itself. According to color chart definitions, white shows the real, unadulterated you. It’s the opposite of black, which serves to hide a thousand figure flaws.

White does indeed look best on men blessed with tall, lean looks. Still, if you have the self confidence, go for it. It’s not uncharted territory; years ago, I saw a famous businessman dressed in white pants and a loud Versace shirt. Take a look at the designs on this page and set out on your own fashion conversion to a whiter shade of pale.
