The Silver Lining

With men garbed in white, women can turn to silver for a new sheen to their clothing. While white signifies purity, silver does not carry the same meaning (maybe that is better than coming off as holier-than-thou when you are most decidedly not).

The summer collections from Milan and Paris have greeted the Year of the Pig with a fanfare of color. Amid the rainbow, silver is making its presence known, a more stolid antidote to all that cheer.

Perhaps there will be those who take a second look at this long little favored color and decide its time has passed. And there may be those who believe it is best suited to the inside of a cigarette packet. Whatever one’s opinion about silver, try wearing it just once, turning your backs on the ranks of conformity in this collective, uniform society of ours.

If the rest cast a quizzical eye as though you are a strange creature from outer space, take it all in stride. It’s like that old Indonesian saying about turning a deaf ear to dogs barking. Over time, those who do the barking will shut up; it’s their appearance that will ultimately cause hoots on the street.
