Taking the reins!

Know the old saying, “Get off your high horse”? But if you really want to announce that your have arrived, then squeeze into a pair of jodhpurs and ride elegantly into the sunset.

“Whether something is cheap or expensive is very relative,” said Larasati Gading, whose equestrian pursuits are a world away from her career as a model.

She added that the budget for horse riding can be adjusted to individual needs.

“You don’t have to own a horse or attire for competing to enjoy the sport. And taking lessons is no more expensive than having a private tutor come to your home.”

She did not agree that horse riding was just another way to waste money. “But there are those who own horses who never actually have anything to do with them,” she added, which is kind of like splurging on a luxury car and then leaving it to gather dust in the garage.

Larasati, who spends from four to six months training in Stuttgart, said horse riding provided a physical and mental workout. It’s a sport for all ages, she added, and as a mother she is pleased by the educational benefits it provides, including in instilling discipline.

For those who wish to ride high in the saddle, Hermes has a range of accessories for your horse and you. So there will be little difference between the two of you --from a luxury point of view, of course.

“For me, the horse is an animal that combines power and grace. But this sport is far removed from everything luxurious and glamorous,” said Larasati, who is accustomed to getting down and dirty in taking care of her stable and rides almost daily.

So if you want to gallop back in time, leaving your Murcilago LP640 Versace in park, who knows if one particular South Jakarta mall management will one day set aside horses-only parking space in front of a popular café. You will then have free rein.

Advice from Larasati

  1. The price of horses varies widely, from Rp 5 million to much grander sums. If you want to spend millions on a four-legged friend, you can.

  2. To find the right horse for you, first consult with an experienced trainer. Not every horse may be to your liking, and vice-versa!

  3. The gestation period for horses is 12 months. If you decide to breed, pay close attention to the nutritional needs of the mother.

  4. Horses enjoy their heyday from 8-20 years, although they can compete until 25. Their lifespan can be more than 30 years.

  5. Upkeep of horses, including veterinarian visits, supplements, feed and training, runs from Rp 1.5 million to Rp 4 million per month.
