The Untidy Look

It’s no longer the time for a strictly neat, every-hair-in-place appearance. Being a bit untidy can work wonders for you this summer.

I am pleased to see the creations of leading fashion houses, who are setting menswear trends that deliberately eschew the rigidly serious or formal. Some of them have even given a disheveled appearance to that usually staid and sober jacket.

It is brought together with a hairstyle (see box The Bad Hair Day) that bestows a just-woken up-appearance, as if the wearer has rushed in to the boardroom straight from bed.

Gucci continues its superslim cut, with tight, crotch-hugging pants that leave little to the imagination. Several other fashion houses favor looser pants matched with colorful shirts. Sweater, cardigans and polo shirts give added support for a more colorful appearance.

This new summer collection should provide impetus to men, especially here in Indonesia, to think out of the fashion box instead of settling for the same old office shirts, tie and pants. Stop saying that your regular wear is enough for you. Try something different – you may enjoy the experience. Of course, staying within your comfort zone is your prerogative, but stepping outside of it will be an enriching, invigorating challenge.

Yes, we know the saying that you cannot judge a book by its cover. Even so, we tend to judge by first impressions. So take time to consider your appearance; even if you have a shimmering IQ, it will not be apparent during your first minutes of introduction. You will have a head start if you look good before that new acquaintance has a chance to discover your smarts. And if you feel too vain and that you have too much time on your hands thinking about how you look, well it may just be true!
