Great Pretenders

With the plastic surgeon’s scalpel making it possible to defy the march of time, some older folks are eagerly adopting the youthful fashions they never got to enjoy all those years ago. Did someone say “reality check”?

As promised last month, here are my picks of the fall/winter collections unveiled in July.

In keeping with this Weekender’s youth generation theme, I am not going to discuss silhouettes and colors, but the wearer.

The models featured on this page are undoubtedly young and beautiful, but even they look a bit too mature for such sprite-focused clothing.

And if the clothes appear too young for them, then what about most of us who said a sad goodbye to our teen years several decades ago.

A couple of weeks ago I headed to Bali with two younger friends. We spent the weekend relaxing on the beach and restaurant and bar-hopping. Of course, a trip to paradise island means shedding the formal wear of Jakarta for casual, sexy duds of tight pants and shorts, T-shirts, and sunglasses.

A week later I looked over the photos. I could only chuckle and shake my head in embarrasment

The youth-oriented clothing could not disguise the fact that I am now on the wrong side of 40, especially standing next to my friends (one 28, the other 32) and with my unruly tufts of gray hair.

My message to designers everywhere is that there is a time for everything and everyone. Please design fashions accordingly, for all ages.
